If you're flying from Manchester Airport with your autistic child, you really need to know about the Airport Awareness scheme.
Launched in 2009, this scheme includes an Autism Awareness Booklet (now available for all three Manchester airport terminals!) which serves as a social story to help children on the autism spectrum learn about what to expect when they travel. You can also watch videos to help prepare your child for travel through each of the terminals:
Best of all, you can receive a special blue wristband for your child. This lets airport staff know that your child is on the autism spectrum so they are able to make adjustments, including being able to fast-track queues and avoid lengthy waiting times.
Ideally, you need to register your details in advance if travelling from Manchester airport with a child on the autism spectrum to benefit most from the Airport Awareness scheme.
To do this, call 08714 777 747 or email customer.relations@manairport.co.uk with your details. This will ensure you receive your band and airport awareness booklet in plenty of time to prepare for your flight.
