Guidance from the ABA on Bullying and Autism Spectrum Disorders
Bullying is an important issue for all children, but those affected by Autism are particularly vulnerable. A national survey by the Give us a Break campaign found that 97% of autistic children are seen by their parents and carers as vulnerable to bullying, with 42.4% of children telling their parents they are often bullied in school.
If your child is affected by bullying, it can be difficult to know how best to support them. Luckily, the Anti Bullying Alliance has produced a wealth of information specifically for parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities.
There is also a PDF guide and an informative Powerpoint Presentation for schools to inform and educate teachers and professionals on how children on the spectrum are affected by bullying (in addition for tips to combat bullying).
We hope that your children feel safe and well supported at school, but if you do learn that your special little ones are suffering from bullying these and other resources on the ABA website can empower you with the knowledge you need to tackle it!
